Dutch summer camp.

Last week I was asked to help out at the annual Dutch summer camp here in San Francsico, and provided a lesson about writing and illustration for kids between the ages 5 and 11. A lot of fun to do! Because of the big age diffence it was a bit challenging to make it fun for everybody, but I think we succeeded. After a short introduction, we first created a story by using pictures only. The children could pick a picture one by one, and so we created the funniest stories.

After that we talked about inspiration and used a suitcase full of things to turn the inspiration button on. One by one they could pick something from the suitcase, sit in the story telling chair and talk about what ever came to their mind. Great fantasy they had!

At last, but not least, we learned the basics of illustrating people and emotions and everyone was of to make their own drawings. Who ever wanted to share their story was of course welcome to do so.

Here are some of the pictures I created for the first activity.

Wat leuk Marije! Heb je ook foto's gemaakt terwijl de kinderen bezig waren? Goed idee trouwens van die koffer!
